Nonlinear Magneto-Optics of Fe Monolayers from first principles: Structural dependence and spin-orbit coupling strength

چکیده
We calculate the nonlinear magneto-optical response of free-standing fcc (001), (110) and (111) oriented Fe monolayers. The bandstructures are determined from first principles using a full-potential LAPW method with the additional implementation of spin-orbit coupling. The variation of the spinorbit coupling strength and the nonlinear magneto-optical spectra upon layer orientation are investigated. We find characteristic differences which indicate an enhanced sensitivity of nonlinear magneto-optics to surface orientation and variation of the in-plane lattice constants. In particular the crossover from onedimensional stripe structures to twodimensional films of (111) layers exhibits a clean signature in the nonlinear Kerr-spectra and demonstrates the versatility of nonlinear magneto-optics as a tool for in situ thin-film analysis. 75.30.Pd;78.20.Ls;73.20.At;75.50.Bb Typeset using REVTEX

Magneto - Optics of freestanding Fe monolayers from first principles
The nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr-effect (NOLIMOKE) is determined for freestanding Fe monolayers with several in-plane structures from first principles. Based on the theory of nonlinear magneto-optics by Hübner and Benne-mann [Phys. Rev. B, 40, 5973 (1989)] we calculate the nonlinear susceptibil-ities of the monolayers using the ab initio FLAPW-method WIEN95 with the additional implementation ...

We extend our previous study of the polarization dependence of the nonlinear optical response to the case of magnetic surfaces and buried magnetic interfaces. We calculate for the longitudinal and polar configuration the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle. In particular, we show which tensor elements of the susceptibilities are involved in the enhancement of the Kerr rotation in nonl...

Using tight-binding models and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the possibility to achieve a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phase on a two-dimensional square lattice, which can be realized in monolayers of double perovskites. We show that effective intersite spin-orbit coupling between eg orbitals can be induced perturbatively, giving rise to a QAH state. Moreover, the effective spin...

We investigate the anisotropy of the optical properties of thin Fe films on GaAs(001) from first-principles calculations. Both intrinsic and magnetization-induced anisotropy are covered by studying the system in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic fields. We use the linearized augmented plane wave method, as implemented in the WIEN2K density functional theory code, to show...

The magnetoresistance of a one-dimensional electron gas in a metallic ferromagnetic nanowire containing two atomic-size domain walls has been investigated in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. The magnetoresistance is calculated in the ballistic regime, within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. It has been demonstrated that the conductance of a magnetic nanowire with double domain walls...
